What links Little Dragon and FIFA Soccer 12?

Have you ever heard of FIFA Soccer 12? Well, it’s a soccer game – and it’s a rather big selling game, too. As it is, previous installments have sold tens of millions respectively, with tens of millions pirated, also. Little Dragon, along with such artists as the Strokes, the Vaccines, TV On The Radio, Cut Copy, and Crystal Castles, feature on the soundtrack to the game, which plays continuously in the background as the player works through his/her options. Talk about a huge case of exposure for the band, eh? And the chosen song? “Nightlight”.

Lyrics to Little Dragon’s “NightLight”

The whole “twistical” piece I’m unsure of, but it would make sense, so I’ve kept it. It kind of sounds like “twist-a-blue”, too. I’m just unsure. Definitely open to suggestion on that one. Anything with an Astrix again denotes confusion. Yukimi, help!

Edit: When I said “Yukimi, help!” I wasn’t expecting that to actually be case until this Tweet from @twittledragon: “@littledragonews well done! real close!… twisted blue form of light turning over etc etc lol”

Edit: Lawrence has gone one better than Yukimi by providing the 100% official links from the liner notes. Thank you!

“NightLight”
Words written by Yukimi Nagano

Open the door, there you’re standing in a row
Dancing in a twisted blue form of light – turning over
Making a sound, then your braiding it around
Turning in a twisted blue form of light – moving your shoulders
1, 2, you move, your feet, your shoes
Flying like a arrow in the room

Be my angel, love
Tell me everything I need from above
Be my heroine, tell them please what we need to never be sin
Be forever sun
Never, never, ever stop everyone
Be my shining light
Lady, I believe you transform the night

Open the door, there you’re standing in a row
Dancing in a twisted blue form of light – turning over
Making a sound, then your braiding it around
Turning in a twisted blue form of light – moving your shoulders
1, 2, you move, your feet, your shoes
Flying like a arrow in the room

Be my angel, love
Tell me everything I need from above
Be my heroine, tell them please what we need to never be sin
Be forever sun
Never, never, ever stop everyone
Be my shining light
Lady, I believe you tranform the night

You open my mind, got me floating out of time
Dancing in a twisted blue form of light
Drifting a sound, got me turning it around
Moving in a twisted blue form of life – moving your shoulders
1, 2, you move, your feet, your shoes
Flying like a arrow in the room

NPR call Little Dragon and “NighLight” “dance-pop: with a spark”

Compared to the output of other European nations, Swedish pop actually makes it across the Atlantic in significant numbers. When it does reach the U.S., it often doesn’t take long before it’s embraced by listeners of all kinds. The country’s latest contribution is Little Dragon, a band whose newly acquired buzz was built in increments, one collaboration at a time.

There was the guest spot on Gorillaz’s Plastic Beach and a yet-to-be-heard studio session with Big Boi, among others, so it’s no surprise that the group sounds so confident in “NightLight,” the first single from the upcoming Ritual Union.

Little Dragon makes pop music for folks who think they hate pop music, and one important trick when attempting such a feat is to make the melody sound more complex than it is. The hook in “NightLight” is carved out of a couple of stiff keyboard chords, which don’t quite fit together but still fall neatly into place on the 4/4 beat. They might be the unexpected visitors Yukimi Nagano sings about, the ones who are “turning and twisting to form a line.” Her lithe vocals sync up with the song’s electric undercurrent, providing the spark in a dance number which might otherwise seem suited for a dilapidated disco hall. – Source

Ritual Union Remix EP to surface in July?

As confirmed by Prefixmag.com and Musicremedy.com, a Remix EP of Ritual Union tracks will surface before the official release of the third album.

Little Dragon’s third album, Ritual Union, might have been pushed back one week to late July, but the Swedes are making up for it by dropping an additional project earlier in the month. It’s a remix EP filled with reworked versions of choice cuts from Ritual Union. And so far, we know that acts like Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Tensnake are handling the remixes. It’s not clear yet which tracks they will be rearranging, but I expect we will hear new versions of lead single “Nightlight” and “Little Man.” – Prefixmag.com

So much new material to look forward to in the coming months.

A teaser for Ritual Union

Hopefully this goes down well. This is just a teaser for the summer ahead or July 12th to be exact. What we’ve got here are four tracks, three of which are live, that will feature on Ritual Union when it surfaces in a couple of months. “NightLight” is the leaked and unmastered version. Remember, you can actually purchase this on iTunes (US) and I’d persuade you to do so as the difference is audible and certain and supporting the artist by throwing out a few pence is surely something that won’t significantly harm your pocket, hopefully. The others, including an excellent recording of “Little Man”, are live performances – which as Little Dragon fans well know can be superior to the record itself.

Tracklist:

1. “NightLight” (Unmastered)
2. “Ritual Union” (Late Night with Jimmy Fallon)
3. “Summertearz” (Pitchfork)
4. “Little Man” (IFC at SXSW)

Jan Scharlau helps Little Dragon see the NightLight

Little Dragon have released their first single off the upcoming Ritual Union LP and it is “NightLight”. The song is available to download from the US iTunes website here, although for whatever reason it seems to be only available in that territory (maybe due to their strong Californian following). Yukimi posted on twittledragon that the single had reached number twenty-two on the single download chart after just two days. You’ve probably heard the streaming quality version of the release (which came about with the initial press release outlining the album due date, appearing on Pitchfork), but at least now we’ve got the chance to get ourselves a truly high quality version of this wonderful track.

The artwork was created by Jan Scharlau and you can check out extended versions of the piece at his website. Ritual Union really is shaping up to be an incredible record. We’ve now heard “Little Man”, “SummerTearz”, “Ritual Union”, and “NightLight” and each is better than the other. Summer can’t come quick enough. If you’re American, go purchase “Nightlight”. It’s just $.99! “Flyin’ like a heroine…”
